Engaging the Youth

Introduction & overview

Instant access to music is a relatively new development and until less than 100 years ago (depending where you were geographically), this was predominantly determined by elders in society, using it as a cultural and community learning tool for the younger generations. It is a very different story today with the commercial value of new music of most genres largely being determined by the youth. How music is shared, communicated, adapted or acquired today is determined through media technology driven by the younger generation.

Integration of youth, education & add sound to your city

The Add Sound to Your City project sees youth support and activation as a primary objective, and to that end the integration of this sector is a top priority. Various organisations in the Netherlands such as Performing Arts Fund NL, Dutch Youth & Training Orchestras and More Music in the Classroom (driven by Queen Maxima) are but three examples of proactive integration of music at school. Within each Add Sound to Your City  community, schools and youth organisations will play active roles with the project and its evolution, promoting art & culture as well as regional identities.

Real musical connectivity

As a national project, there are basic guidelines and recommendations to enhance the overall Dutch cohesiveness. Over and above this, each region will also encourage their own identity development through music, creating a musical connectivity between all generations, largely driven by the schools, curricular programmes, students, their parents and of course educators and tutors.

Musical city flavours

Musical trends nowadays are being predominantly set by the youth and regional variances in focus and community representation are often also determined by them. Want to know the regional music buzz, then simply ask the younger generation and you’ll swiftly be brought up to speed. Essential therefore to have input from that sector.

Internships

Being able to investigate opportunities without commitment, whilst learning crucial elements of any particular sector and good business practices is the core of what internships are all about. And Add Sound to Your City  takes this responsibility seriously. Too often nowadays one hears of specific sectors that see internships as “free labour”. Internships via Add Sound to Your City  will involve liaison with educators, development monitoring and professional guidance where relevant and appropriate.
